Colour-coded Signs in Newtown
June 30, 2015
Even in the age of Satnav devices, it can still be difficult to find your way around – even when its close to home.
It’s a problem that the emergency services, delivery firms, and visitors have experienced at Newtown in Ebbw Vale. There were limited signs in the neighbourhood, most of which were in poor condition which made it difficult to find homes.
That was until Tai Calon Community Housing stepped in to solve the problem. After talking to local people, the social housing provider has erected colour-coded signs which clearly show the different streets and in some cases where to find a particular property.
The signs have been funded as part of Tai Calon’s £14 million Your Neighbourhood, Your Choice programme.
Andy MacDougall, Project Manager said: “We wanted to make it easier for people to find their way around the neighbourhood, whilst at the same time introducing some fresh, vibrant colour in to the community. The signs look great and so far we’ve had nothing but praise for them from the community, delivery firms and visitors to the area. We are also delighted to have been able to work with a local supplier to boost local employment.”
The signs were manufactured by social enterprise, Monwel Signs which is based in Ebbw Vale. The firm provides real employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
Leslie Barr, Managing Director of Monwel said of the project, “We are always delighted to work with local organisations. It was a pleasure to provide the signs for Newtown and be part of the project. To hear that the local community is delighted with them certainly makes it even more satisfying. We pride ourselves on working in conjunction with local organisations and the local community”.
Tai Calon now plans to erect colour-coded signs in other neighbourhoods across the county borough.
