Dementia Friends

Through working with the local authority and in Tai Calon we have now got 285 Dementia Friends.

A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend.

Rachel Rees - Housing Manager is a Dementia Champion, who is a volunteer who encourages others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia in their community. She has run sessions at Tai Calon and have helped to train 285 dementia friends.

The work we have done with Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and the local primary school Blaen-Y-Cwm (years 3-6) mean that we have helped the school to become dementia friendly. There will be a presentation of the logo with Tai Calon and the local authority soon. It was amazing the amount of children who had experienced someone having dementia in their families and were keen to learn more. The children really engaged and were keen to learn more about the illness.

As an organisation this has helped us to be more understanding in how to help our tenants. Our Customer Services team have been through the awareness session and have flagged tenants when they have identified the warning signs.

We have also had another incident where the pattern on the carpet to the person with dementia was causing them distress as this looked to them like the carpet was infested. Neighbourhoods were able to support here as they had an understanding what is like for that person to live with dementia.

Ultimately the awareness sessions help people to be better citizens and it’s about social responsibility and creating caring/understanding communities to live in = better places to live.
