First Green Scheme of its kind

The first green scheme of its kind in Blaenau Gwent has won planning permission. Its part of a £14 million project which has seen local people and Tai Calon Community Housing working together to improve the area in which they live.

Work will start in February to transform a local eyesore into a much needed car park and recreation area in St James Way, Tredegar. The scheme had been devised after Tai Calon asked tenants and residents what they wanted.

The plans were drawn up by Landscape Architect, Mike Hairie, and taken back to the community for further consultation before being submitted for planning permission.

Environmental consultant, Owen Davies, said: “This is the first project of its kind within Tai Calon and the local community have played a key role in developing the scheme which will help transform the local area.

Meanwhile tenants and residents of Ashvale (pictured) have been shown plans to rejuvenate their neighbourhood.

The Ashvale scheme has been drawn up by Landscape Architect, Wyn Mackley, after Tai Calon again held Your Neighbour, Your Choice roadshows in the area.

The scheme is to improve the look of the area, as well as providing off road parking, a landscaped recreation area and play spaces. The plans went on show at Woodlands Social Club, Ashvale where tenants and residents were asked for their views on the final detail of the currently unnamed project.

Andrew MacDougall, Project Manager for Tai Calon, said: “Thank you to everyone who has taken part in the consultation. We want to get the scheme right for the area, which is why it’s so important that local people have a say in what happens. I do hope that local tenants and residents will help us come up with a name for the project.”

If you know the Ashvale area and have a suggestion for the name of the project Tai Calon would like to hear from you. Visit Facebook.com/taicalon and post your suggestion and if it’s selected you will receive a £25 gift voucher.

Tai Calon is currently consulting with a number of communities across Blaenau Gwent about what improvements they would like in their area.
