Helping Hand

Congratulations and Well Done to Caroline Bridge, residents, family and friends of Riverside Flats in Blaina.  In just three years they have raised a staggering £10,000 for Hospice of the Valleys, “Precious Moments New Building Appeal”.  It all started when Marlene Davies, a resident of the sheltered complex who has had melanoma, wanted to raise money for charity by making greetings cards.  Scheme manager, Caroline Bridge suggested the appeal to build a new hospice centre in Ebbw Vale, and it all went from there.

The residents, their family and friends ran a series of money making events over the years to raise the cash.

Kevin Davidge, a fundraising officer with the appeal, said: “There just aren’t the words to describe how grateful we are to Caroline and everyone for all their efforts.  They have all worked tirelessly and we are so lucky for their support.”

Caroline Bridge has been a volunteer for Hospice of the Valleys for more than 12 years and does four table top sales a month in aid of the charity.  “It all started from a conversation between Marlene and myself.  It is lovely to think that we are able to help others worse off than ourselves.”

Marlene Davies, who also has arthritis, says making the cards keeps her active.  “I enjoy doing them and now plan to make them in aid of diabetes research.”

Working Together

Contractors from the nine firms working with us to improve our homes have been into our offices at Blaina to discuss our achievements over the past year ... and to look forward to the next 12 months.  When we took over, none of our properties met the Welsh Government’s Welsh Housing Quality Standard.  We are spending £111 million by 2015 to make sure they do.

Simon Carter, Director of Property and Asset Management, said: “We are on budget and on target with our WHQS programme.  Nevertheless, the meeting was an excellent opportunity for us to review the work completed so far and to examine ways of doing it even better over the coming year.

Paul Winterson, Head of Asset Management, added: “We are also having some amazing feedback from our tenants.  In the latest survey, 98.08 percent of them thought the finished work to be good or excellent.”

The long arm of the law

Lettings officer Bern Hackling had a bit of a shock when checking an empty flat at Brynmawr in Blaenau Gwent.  He was about to leave the property when he was stopped by two officers from Gwent Police demanding to know what he was doing.

“A neighbour had heard me moving around inside and because they knew the place was empty they quite rightly called the police,” said Bern who works for Tai Calon Community housing.  “They did absolutely the right thing.  I could have been anyone.  It’s really nice to know our tenants are so security conscious.”

A Gwent Police spokesman said: "We would always recommend anyone who believes a crime is in progress to call 999 immediately."

Tai Calon is the largest social landlord in Blaenau Gwent.  Simon Carter, director of Assets, said, “We take the security of our tenants, staff and property very seriously.  Our vehicles are fitted with trackers so we can trace them if stolen and we also remove anything of value from our homes while they are empty.”

Even though Bern Hackling’s actions were entirely innocent, he also encourages anyone to contact the police if they see someone acting suspiciously.

Another step closer to their dream

Friends, Claire King and Hannah Armstrong are another step closer to starting their own business.  The mums, who live at Rassau in Ebbw Vale, and are tenants of Tai Calon Community Housing, want to set up their own plastering business.  They have already completed their National Qualifications Framework Level 1 in Plastering and have now taken a one day course in “Professional Development and CV Writing”.

“We really enjoyed the course and it will help us fulfil our dream of working for ourselves,” said Claire. Hannah added: “We have been practising our plastering skills at the homes of friends and are still planning to take our level 2 in plastering.  We have been thinking about calling ourselves, Pink Ladies Plastering.”
Six people attended the course, which was run by Grow Enterprise Wales, at Tai Calon’s offices in Blaina. 17 year old Dafydd Robbins from Ebbw Vale has been looking for work for 18 months.  “I have had work experience but have yet to find a job.  I do not mind what I do.  I am looking for anything, but would love the opportunity to work with animals.”
Anyone interested in attending future courses should contact Natasha Jones on 0300 303 1717.

Bad Weather

Staff at Tai Calon Community Housing have been busy catching up with repairs after the bad weather over the last few days.

The organisation received 125 “out of hours” emergency calls between Friday evening and Monday morning as the heavy rain and high winds caused problems across Blaenau Gwent.  Ninety percent of them were weather related and around half about roofs.

Mark Williams, Head of Property Services, said: “We are carrying out the repairs as quickly as possible.  While it is too dangerous to go up onto roofs in windy weather, we are doing everything possible to protect property and belongings.  As an organisation we are spending a lot of money replacing roofs and I am certain that the number of calls over the past few days would have been much higher if not for that work.”
