Gas safety
Appliances which have not been installed correctly, or appliances that are faulty, can leak a poisonous gas called carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause serious long term health issues and can in some cases be fatal.
The symptoms associated with exposure to carbon monoxide are very similar to having flu, food poisoning, viral infections and fatigue. It is therefore very common for people to mistake these symptoms for another illness.
Other signs that could indicate it is carbon monoxide poisoning, include that you start to feel better when you leave home, but the symptoms come back once you’ve returned home. It may also be that other members of your household are experiencing the same symptoms, including any pets.
If you are experiencing the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, what should you do?
Make sure you get some fresh air immediately. Open your doors and windows, turn off your gas appliances and leave the house.
See your doctor straight away or go to the hospital, and inform them that you think you may have carbon monoxide poisoning.
If you are worried that there is an immediate danger to your community, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 which is free of charge.
