Sheltered Housing

Everyone wants to live in a home that’s safe, warm and secure. As you get older your housing needs may change.
Sheltered housing is an alternative form of housing that offers complete independence i.e. everyone has their own front door; with the added security of living in ‘group’ housing e.g. some communal facilities are available within the building.
Different schemes have different social activities which you may or may not want to get involved in e.g. coffee mornings, bingo and days out.
Tai Calon has eleven sheltered housing schemes throughout Blaenau Gwent (see below) and all have self contained flats or bungalows.
All of our residents have regular contact with a scheme manager and are able to contact an emergency call centre 24 hours a day.
In general the schemes are made up of a mixture of flats, bed-sits and bungalows and have a range of facilities including a laundry, communal lounge and kitchen (and in some case a guest bedroom so that family members can stay).
To apply to live in one of our schemes you must be:
- Over 60 years of age or;
- Below 60 years but are either vulnerable, have a physical disability or are registered as disabled.

Our Sheltered Housing Forum
It is important that sheltered housing residents influence the service that they receive from Tai Calon. The Sheltered Housing Forum is a group of sheltered housing residents that meet every two months with officers from Tai Calon to discuss issues that affect people living in sheltered schemes.
The forum produces its own newsletter and identifies key issues associated with sheltered housing. The venue for the forum varies between Tai Calon’s offices in Blaina and any one of the sheltered schemes.
If you would like to join the forum, why not contact Chloe Williams, Community Investment and Involvement Officer on 0300 303 1717 to find out how.
