Well done to these community heroes who were nominated for their excellent work during covid-19’s lockdown. Not only were they working so hard with their home-schooling but they also decided to complete a charity run raising over £300 for the local district nurses and made little care-packages as a thank you for all the nurses hard work. Excellent well done!
Well done to Nicky who is a very worthy community hero. During lockdown Nicky decided to brave the shave and raise money for electronic tablets for the local hospital wards so that patients who had covid19 could talk and see their loved ones whilst isolating. Nicky raised enough money for 8 tablets! WOW!
Well done to Soffi who was nominated for this award for all her fantastic work, a very worthy winner. In the past year Soffi has organised a band night at a local venue and raised an amazing £600 for the local National Autistic Society. During lockdown Soffi walked a whole marathon (28 Miles) in 4 days to raise money for local key workers and raised another £500 which was used to purchase hampers where she then delivered them to key workers. She also made cards for her friends to help cheer them up during the difficult times.
Crystal was nominated for the community hero award as Crystal is classed as a young carer. Not only does Crystel help look after her mother but she is also an amazing role model for her younger siblings who she also helps to care for. Crystel’s mother is so proud of her and so are we at Tai Calon for being a true hero in our communities!

Susan was nominated for this award for all the fantastic work she does in our communities. Susan founded the charity one life autism support group around 5 years ago who are now based at the log cabin in Hilltop. During the last 5 years Susan has worked tirelessly to build the charity and improve the building and grounds of the log cabin. It was noted on one of her nominations that “Susan will help anyone who asks for support.
Susan is the most loving and supportive, positive, one of a kind person, always greets everyone with her infectious smile and warm personality, caring with a heart of gold and just wants the best for everyone that comes to her.” I know Susan would also like me to say that she does have help from volunteers and without them it wouldn’t be possible so well done and thank you. Susan you have gone above and beyond in getting the charity to the place it is today so well done and thank you for all your great work.

Zoe is a true community hero and a worthy winner for all the work she does for her community. During lockdown Zoe worked tirelessly making food parcels and delivering them to tenants and residents who were not able to leave their homes due to shielding. Zoe ensured that she was always available to anyone who needed her help during the pandemic with a listening ear and a smile if needed whilst also caring for her 2 children. Zoe was nominated for this award a whopping 18 times! We needed to mention this as it just goes to show how thankful Zoe’s community is for all her hard work.
A group within your community who have gone above and beyond
Friends of Six-bells park were nominated for this award as they have worked tirelessly over the last 4 years reviving a neglected play park from the brink of closure to a wonderful facility for the whole community. The park also includes a refreshment area which is run by volunteers, the park has access for wheelchairs and play facilities for disabled children.
Well done to all the volunteers for all their hard work over the years transforming the park to its former glory making it a fabulous place where families can have endless fun. You are all heroes to your community!
This group were nominated for all their hard work during the last year. This youth group have been giving up their Saturday mornings to help make sandwich packs for the homeless in Newport and also include messages of hope and comfort in the packs.
They have raised the money themselves by doing various different activities like raffle tickets and have now decided to expand the packs to homeless dogs making puppy packs. Well done everyone your work is truly appreciated and you are all heroes!
This group was nominated an amazing 15 times which shows that the work they do in the community is very appreciated. Here is one of the nominations we received “This group work tirelessly from early until late in the night, every day, every week, every year. They soon established Sirhowy Community Centre as the heartbeat of the community, providing help, advice and activities for all ages. It became a base for groups and events and the committee put all of their energy into raising the funds to make the centre a success.
Laptops appeared, the men’s shed was built, garden planted, food distributed and things were going from success to success when the pandemic struck. Instead of packing up and shrinking back Into their homes, they stepped up and became the food distribution centre for the town. They always did food distribution, Jesus cares bags, fair share, end of day food collections from supermarkets but lockdown meant the need rocketed, and I am so proud to add that Sirhowy delivered.
Their activity stepped up as did their fundraising to meet that need. Their online sales became legendary recycling clothes toys and household Items and generating funds to feed the need. Food parcels were delivered to those shielding and to families that receive free school meals. Their service was not just felt locally but across Tredegar and soon they were supporting families across Blaenau Gwent and Rhymney valley.
In addition to the community Benefits there are huge environmental benefits as literally tonnes of food that would normally go to waste is used. Any that is past its best feeds local livestock nothing is wasted. Local families who could not afford fresh fruit and veg have their five a day. Children are introduced to food that they normally may not be able to buy. Everyone’s a winner but none of this would be possible without the volunteers who give their all, every day, every week, every year.” Well done all volunteers at Sirhowy community centre you are true community heroes!
