Thermal imaging of surveys

IRT Surveys Ltd will conduct home energy efficiency surveys of our homes using specialist Infrared thermal imaging equipment.

The surveys will begin on 17th January 2022 between 6pm and 12pm. You may notice IRT vans, equipment and surveyors moving in and around your neighbourhood at night. This is because the best time to do thermal imaging surveys is at night when temperatures are cooler. Due to the surveys being external (usually taken from the road), there will be no need for any IRT team to enter homes. All IRT surveyors will carry identification which can be checked by contacting Tai Calon’s Customer Services Team.

Who is IRT?

IRT Survey Ltd is a surveying company specialising in identifying what measures can be applied to homes in the UK to make them more energy-efficient. https://irtsurveys.co.uk/

What is Infrared thermal imaging?

Infrared thermal imaging is a technique that uses specialist cameras to detect heat loss from a property. By finding where heat is being lost, Tai Calon will better understand what future retrofit measures can make your home more energy-efficient.

What does a thermal image look like?

Below is a typical representation of an image taken with an infrared thermal imaging camera.  Areas marked blue generally indicate cold surfaces where heat is not being lost from home.  Areas marked red are a good sign of where heat is being lost.

What do we mean by retrofit measure?

Where measures are fitted to homes that have already been built, they are referred to as “Retrofit Measures”. “Measures” refers to the types of works and or technologies that can be fitted to a home to make it more energy-efficient. For example, this could be in the form of improving the insulation properties of external walls (e.g. by applying external wall insulation) and or fitting renewable technologies such as solar panels to the roof.

Why has Tai Calon appointed IRT Surveys Ltd?

Tai Calon has made a commitment in its 2021 – 2025 Corporate Plan to improve the energy efficiency of our homes. To start doing this, we need to find out how energy-efficient our customer’s homes are. Thermal imaging is one way that can help tell us what future retrofit measures can make your home more energy-efficient.

What will our customers need to do?

Due to the surveys being external (usually undertaken from the public highway), there will be no need for our customers to be at home during the survey. You may notice IRT vans, equipment and surveyors moving in and around your neighbourhood.  All IRT surveyors will carry identification which can be checked via Tai Calon’s Customer Services Team.

What about your privacy?

We would like to assure residents that surveyors do not hold their personal details. Images taken cannot be seen through walls or glazing and will be used to assess the property condition only.
