Our Environmental Improvement Programme known as “Your Neighbourhood, Your Choice”, has been working since 2013 towards providing “Homes and thriving neighbourhoods where people are proud to live”.
It has always been important to us that tenants and residents have their say in deciding what work is carried out in their community. As noted by former Project manager, Andy MacDougall, “We know that such schemes can only succeed if local people are actively involved in designing and looking after them. This is why we work hard to involve the neighbourhood in every aspect of the project.” A sentiment that is echoed by the current Project Manager, Stephen Phillips, and his team.
At the outset of the environmental works, we held 24 road shows to obtain the views of tenants and residents as to their priorities for the neighbourhoods they live in.
The most popular requests were:
- Provide or improve children’s play areas.
- Provide better car parking.
- Solve problems caused by dog mess, litter and the dumping of rubbish.
- Improve upon boundaries and fencing.
Further to the initial road shows, we have continued the consultation process before, during and after the undertaking of any works in order to ensure that everyone can voice their opinions or concerns and that the community is happy with the work we have done.
The first of several projects to be completed was at St James Way in Tredegar. Tenants and residents had asked for better car parking as the existing car park didn’t have enough spaces. The area however was adjacent to a patch of derelict land. Following consultation with local people we provided extra places, landscaped the area and erected new fencing around it.
This is what a tenant said: “We put in the petition, but didn’t expect anything to come of it. Luckily it did and we are over the moon with the scheme.
It really looks nice now. It’s a lot better, cleaner and people have more space to park. It’s great, everyone did a fantastic job. We are really pleased that we have been listened to. It has made a real difference.”
We have since undertaken further works across our estates including:
Ashvale car park and play area, Hilltop shops car park area, Cae Glas environmental regeneration, St. George’s court environmental regeneration, Waunheulog environmental regeneration and our ongoing works at Newtown.
