Tai Calon Community Housing and Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council (BGCBC) are delighted to announce the launch of a series of new community orchards across the borough, bringing a fresh focus on nature, sustainability, and community wellbeing.
Following discussions with BGCBC in late 2023, five sites were identified for the initiative, chosen in alignment with Tai Calon’s upcoming development plans.
The selected locations include:
- Rassau
- Bryn Coch
- Gurnos
- Gwaun Helyg Road
- Mount Pleasant Estate
The project, delivered by Land Water and Environmental Projects (LWEP), will see the creation of natural boundaries using native hedging, the planting of hardy fruit trees, and a rich mix of wildflowers and bulbs to support pollinators and improve biodiversity. These enhancements enrich local green spaces, offering residents a place to enjoy while helping wildlife thrive.
In addition to the orchards, each site will also include handmade bug hotels, marking the final phase of the enhancements. These small but impactful structures offer safe shelter for invertebrates, even when grass-cutting occurs, helping support a healthy and balanced local ecosystem.
“BGCBC funded the setup and supply of the bug hotels, and we provided the land,” added Aaron Browning -Green Earth Team Leader. Special thanks go to Sheryl at BGCBC, whose hard work made the project possible. It’s been fantastic to see it all come together.”
These green enhancements form part of a broader shared ambition between Tai Calon and BGCBC to improve access to nature and support environmental sustainability across Blaenau Gwent, benefiting both people and the planet.
