As summer rolls in and we spend more time enjoying the sunshine with barbecues, garden parties, and outdoor get-togethers, it’s important to remember that fire safety is just as important in the warmer months as it is in winter.
Here at Tai Calon, we want all our customers to enjoy the summer safely, so we’ve put together some top tips to help you reduce the fire risk in and around your home. Whether you’re firing up the grill or lighting a few candles for the atmosphere, a few simple precautions can make all the difference.
Summer Fire Safety Tips
1. Barbecue safely
- Always keep your barbecue away from fences, sheds, trees and anything that can catch fire.
- Never leave a lit barbecue unattended.
- Ensure it’s on a flat, stable surface and out of the way of children and pets.
- Only use approved BBQ fuel or firelighters – never petrol or paraffin.
2. Keep your kitchen fire-free
- Clean cooking surfaces regularly – leftover grease or crumbs can catch fire.
- Empty your toaster’s crumb tray and wipe down your microwave, too.
- Never leave pans unattended, and be extra cautious with chip pans – never add water to a panfire!
3. Candle with care
- Never leave candles burning unattended.
- Place them on heat-resistant surfaces and avoid soft furnishings, curtains, or anything flammable.
- Consider using battery-operated alternatives.
4. Unplug heat-based appliances
- Items like hair straighteners or irons get very hot. They should always be unplugged and stored safely after use – ideally in heat-proof pouches.
5. Check your smoke alarms
- You should have a working smoke alarm on every floor of your home.
- You must test them regularly and keep them clean – they’re your first line of defence if a fire breaks out.
Protect What Matters
While we hope you never experience fire or smoke damage, accidents can happen. That’s why it’s vital to think about home contents insurance. Tai Calon and Community Housing Cymru (CHC) recommend considering the My Home Contents Insurance Scheme, designed especially for people living in social housing. It can help you replace your belongings if the worst happens.
