How to Keep Your Home Clean and Reduce Mould

1. Regular Cleaning

  • Clean your home regularly to prevent the build-up of dust, bacteria, and allergens.
  • Pay attention to areas prone to damp or restricted airflow.

2. Focus on Cold and Hidden Areas

  • Mould forms easily on cold surfaces and areas with poor airflow.
  • Clean these areas more frequently (behind furniture, corners, window sills, around vents).

3. Treat Mould Early

  • Tackle small patches of mould as soon as they appear.
  • Use mould sprays or household cleaning products suitable for mould removal.
  • Wear gloves when cleaning mould and ensure good ventilation.

4. Establish a Weekly Cleaning Routine

  • Vacuum and dust your home once a week.
  • Treat any mould-prone areas weekly to stop build-up.
  • Change bedding weekly and wash at 60°C to kill dust mites and bacteria.
  • Keep surfaces clutter-free so air can circulate and moisture can’t build up.
  • Use a damp cloth for wiping surfaces rather than a dry one (less dust in the air).

5. Maintain Good Airflow

  • Open windows or use extractor fans when cooking or bathing to reduce moisture.
  • Don’t block air vents or trickle vents.
  • Move furniture slightly away from walls to improve airflow.
Preventing slips, trips and falls.

Tips for preventing falls in the home include:

  • Immediately cleaning up spillages
  • Removing clutter, trailing wires and frayed or loose carpets
  • Making sure all rooms, passages and staircases are well-lit
  • Organising your home so that climbing, stretching and bending are kept to a minimum, and to avoid bumping into things.
  • Getting help to do things you’re unable to do safely on your own
  • Don’t walk on slippery floors and wear well-fitting shoes that support your ankle
  • Not wearing trailing clothes that might trip you up
