A recent case in Blaenau Gwent highlights the serious impact illegal waste activity can have on our communities and the important role enforcement plays in tackling it.
A resident from Tredegar was recently convicted of a number of environmental offences following an investigation by Blaenau Gwent Council. These included fly-tipping, burning waste, and failing to safely manage waste during transport.
The case formed part of a planned operation targeting illegal waste carriers. As part of this work, council officers carried out a test collection of household waste. The waste was fitted with a tracking device, allowing officers to monitor its journey.
Tai Calon was pleased to support this operation. About 18 months ago, we provided access to a vacant garage, which helped create a realistic setting for the test purchase activity. This assisted the council in gathering clear evidence of illegal activity.
Instead of being taken to a licensed waste facility, the waste was transported to a remote area in Ebbw Vale and burned within around an hour of collection. Using tracking data and other evidence, officers quickly located the site and confirmed what had happened.
The individual involved admitted the offences in court and was sentenced to a 12-month community order, including 150 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £1,500 in costs and a victim surcharge.
Fly-tipping is more than an environmental nuisance. It can pose risks to health and safety, damage local environments, and place additional costs on public services to clear it up.
This case demonstrates how local authorities are taking proactive steps to identify and prevent illegal waste activity, including the use of test purchases and other enforcement tools where appropriate.
It also reflects the value of partnership working. By supporting initiatives like this in practical ways, organisations can help strengthen efforts to protect local communities.
For Tai Calon, it’s a timely reminder of the importance of helping customers understand how to dispose of waste responsibly and the risks associated with using unlicensed waste carriers.
If something doesn’t look or feel right, reporting it can make a real difference. Sharing concerns helps prevent harm and ensures the right action can be taken.
