Many everyday items in our homes use lithium batteries – from phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools. They’re safe when used properly, but if damaged or charged incorrectly, they can cause fires.

Common items to be aware of.

You’ll find lithium batteries in things like:

  • Mobile phones and tablets
  • Laptops and computers
  • E-cigarettes and vapes
  • E-scooters and e-bikes
  • Power tools and vacuum cleaners
  • Smart watches, cameras and portable chargers

Simple steps to stay safe

A few small actions can make a big difference:

  • Use the right charger – always use the one that came with your device, or a trusted replacement.
  • Charge safely – place devices on a hard, flat surface, away from anything that could catch fire
  • Don’t leave charging unattended – avoid charging overnight or when you’re out.
  • Keep them cool and dry – heat and moisture increase the risk.
  • Check for damage – if a battery is swollen, leaking or damaged, don’t use it.
  • Unplug when fully charged – this helps prevent overheating.
  • Test smoke alarms regularly

Keeping shared spaces safe

If you live in a flat or shared building, please help keep everyone safe:

  • Keep corridors, stairways and shared areas clear at all times.
  • Don’t store or charge e-scooters, e-bikes or vapes in communal areas.
  • Store all personal items inside your home or in your allocated space.

Items left in shared areas may be removed for safety. If not collected within 7 days, they may be donated to charity.

If you’re arranging a bulky item collection, contact your neighbourhood officer for advice on where to store it safely.
